Welcome to Canine First Aider

If you work with dogs for a living or have the responsibility of caring for dogs at home, it is important that you are able to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.  First-aid treatment is not designed to replace the services of a veterinary surgeon but rather to stabilise the patient until professional attention can be obtained.

It could literally save an animals life!

This programme is delivered by Improve International, who are the UK leaders in veterinary led training.  During the interactive one-day course you will be taught how to deal with a variety of canine emergencies including:

  • pic_4How to restrain and safely handle the patient.
  • How to assess the injured patient – monitoring the vital signs.
  • Wounds – dealing with cuts and bleeding.
  • Dealing with sprains and strains.
  • Broken bones – what to do and when.
  • Dealing with collapse and performing resuscitation techniques.
  • Dealing with heatstroke and burns.
  • Dealing with bites and stings.
  • Dealing with eye and ear problems.
  • Common poisonings and what to do.

Practical sessions will involve restraint and handling, checking vital signs (temperature, breathing, heart beat and pulses, circulation), applying bandages and splints plus resuscitation techniques including cardiac massage and mouth-to-snout.
